The Essence Model™
Healing is important. But what is all this healing for?
After years of working as a therapist and exploring my own path of healing and personal growth, I developed The Essence Model, an integrative framework that brings together the approaches and understandings that have shaped my work.
The Essence Model draws from somatic therapy, EMDR, parts work, attachment theory, and contemplative practices. It offers a way to understand how our experiences shape us, how we can heal the burdens we carry, and how we can move toward a life that reflects who we truly are.
At the heart of the model is a simple understanding: We are more than our histories, our struggles, and the patterns we've developed to navigate life. Beneath those experiences is our Essence, our inherent worth and the qualities that make us uniquely ourselves.
Healing helps us reconnect with that Essence. But healing isn't the destination. It's what becomes possible through healing that gives the work its greater purpose.
Much of traditional therapy focuses on understanding and resolving emotional pain, trauma, and patterns that interfere with our lives. This work is essential, and it's an important aspect of The Essence Model.
But I also believe therapy can help us discover and develop what's already good within us.
Our natural Gifts, our capacity for connection, our creativity, our values, and the things that bring us a sense of purpose are just as worthy of attention as the experiences that have caused us pain.
The Essence Model brings these dimensions together, recognizing that healing and flourishing are connected. As we understand ourselves more deeply, develop a compassionate relationship with our experiences, and release burdens that no longer serve us, we create greater freedom to live in Alignment with who we are.
The model is organized around eleven interconnected elements:
1. Essence — Our inherent worth and the essential qualities of who we are.
2. Gifts — The natural strengths, capacities, and qualities we bring into the world.
3. Burdens — The emotional wounds and experiences we carry.
4. Core Beliefs — The conclusions we've developed about ourselves, others, and the world.
5. Adaptive Patterns — The ways we've learned to protect ourselves, connect, and navigate life.
6. Loving Presence — Meeting our inner experiences with compassion, curiosity, and acceptance.
7. Transformation — The process of healing and creating new possibilities.
8. Laying Down Burdens — Releasing what we no longer need to carry.
9. Gifts Expressed — Bringing our natural qualities more fully into our relationships and everyday lives.
10. Alignment — Making choices that reflect our values, Essence, and authentic direction.
11. Flourishing — Living with greater freedom, connection, vitality, purpose, and love.
These elements aren't intended as a rigid sequence. They offer a framework for understanding our experiences and supporting growth throughout life.
The Essence Model provides the guiding philosophy for my work at Ascent Counseling. Rather than applying the same process to everyone, I draw from established therapeutic approaches to support each person's individual needs.
Our work may include somatic awareness, EMDR, parts work, exploration of attachment patterns, mindfulness, and contemplative practices. We may focus on healing unresolved experiences, understanding protective patterns, strengthening self-compassion, or reconnecting with the qualities and aspirations that make life feel fulfilling.
I especially enjoy working with adults who are ready to deepen their self-understanding, explore longstanding patterns, navigate life transitions, and continue growing beyond the work they've already done.
My intention is to create a collaborative space where you can understand yourself more fully, heal what needs attention, and explore what becomes possible as you live with greater freedom and Alignment.
You don't have to be in crisis to benefit from counseling. Sometimes we're ready to understand ourselves more deeply, reconnect with what gives our lives direction, or discover how to live with greater authenticity and intention.
The Essence Model offers a framework for that exploration.
Because the purpose of healing isn't simply to feel better. It's to live more fully.
